This article from an unknown magazine was found with the materials Winfred Maxwell had saved from WWII. It had been added at a later date.

The article covers events going on August 14 – 22, 1945. It illuminates the struggles going on in Japan’s high command as the Emperor had decided to accept the Allies demand for unconditional surrender. Not all agreed withe the Emperor’s decision. Some tried to thwart the Emperor’s plans by attempting a Coup De Tate .

Winfred was the RO/Navigator on one of the first ten C-54 transports to land at the Japanese Atsugi Naval Air Base near Tokyo on August 28th, prior to the official surrender on September 2nd, 1945.
