The Places

Irondale was the hometown of the Maxwell family.  It was, and is, a small town (pop. about 450; then and now) located about 80 miles southeast of St. Louis in Washington County, MO.  Nearby towns include Leadwood, Caledonia, Bismark, and Potosi.  Irondale had a train station, post office, bank, high school, cafe, 2 general stores, 5 churches, a gas station/garage, a feed store, a funeral home, and a pool hall.  Many were employed at the lumber mill and nearby lead mines. The town was best known for it’s Regional Boy Scout Camp with an Olympic size outdoor pool. In area, it was the second largest Boy Scout Camp in the country.

Winfred and Clifford’s hometown. Where ‘the Folks’ (Guy and Cressie Maxwell) lived with their youngest sister (Patsy Ann). Their older sister (Margaret) had moved to work in St. Louis, MO.

Army Air Force Technical School - Sioux Falls, SD

Where Winfred went to school for 18 weeks to become a Radio Operator (R.O.) for the U.S. Army Air Force.
